The District Societies for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCAs) in the Union Territory (UT) have initiated a membership drive and are calling upon animal lovers and enthusiasts to join their cause. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act of 1960, it is the responsibility of every individual having charge or caring for an animal to ensure their well-being and prevent unnecessary pain and suffering.
Established in all three districts of the UT on 23rd November 2017, the DSPCAs play a crucial role in supporting the government, the Animal Welfare Board, and local authorities in executing and implementing the provisions of the Act. As part of their reconstitution process, the Managing Committees of these societies will be revamped.
The DSPCAs are actively seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about animal welfare and are willing to contribute to the control of stray animals. Interested persons are encouraged to become lifetime members of their respective district’s DSPCA by applying for membership with the General Secretary of the society or by contacting the Deputy Commissioner Office or the Zonal Veterinary Officer for assistance. The lifetime membership subscription fee is set at Rs. 1000/-. This membership drive will continue until 30th July 2023.
To get involved and support the cause, individuals can reach out to the respective DSPCAs or contact the designated officials. For South Andaman, interested individuals can connect with the DSPCA or the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) in Port Blair. In North & Middle Andaman, individuals can reach out to the DSPCA or the SVO located in Mayabunder. For Nicobar District, interested parties can contact the DSPCA or the SVO.
