District Water and Sanitation Committee Reviews Summer 2026 Water Availability and Management in South Andaman

A meeting of the District Water and Sanitation Committee was held to review water availability and management strategies for the upcoming summer of 2026 in South Andaman. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman), Ms. Purva Garg, IAS, and attended by senior officials and elected representatives from various bodies.

The meeting was attended by the Special Secretary (APWD), Mr. Vinayak Chamadia, IAS; Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, Mr. Prakash Adhikari; Chairperson, Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC), Mr. Shahul Hameed; members of Panchayati Raj Institutions, Pradhans of Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samiti members, Ward Councillors, a representative of the Hon’ble Member of Parliament, along with senior officials of APWD and SVPMC.

During the deliberations, participants discussed the prevailing water scenario, preparedness measures, and the need for coordinated efforts to ensure uninterrupted water supply during the peak summer months. Public representatives raised concerns over irregular water supply schedules, delays in pumping from the Lamba Line Treatment Plant, the urgent need for replacement of old pipelines, and the requirement for desilting works.

Responding to the concerns, the Special Secretary, APWD assured the committee that necessary action was being taken to address the issues highlighted, with a focus on mitigating public inconvenience during the summer.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of water conservation. Public representatives were requested to actively assist in creating awareness among residents and to support the implementation of water curtailment measures as part of the APWD’s Summer Action Plan, aimed at ensuring equitable and sustainable water distribution across the district.
