DLSA and IHRCCO Organise Legal Awareness Programme on Women’s and Senior Citizens’ Rights

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in collaboration with the International Human Rights & Crime Control Organization (IHRCCO), organized a Legal Awareness Programme at Eastern Gate, Lamba Line, Sri Vijaya Puram. The event focused on raising awareness about the legal rights and protections available to women and senior citizens.

The programme was graced by Mr. Sudhir Kumar, Hon’ble District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, DLSA, A&N Islands, along with Ms. Arkabrati Neogi, Chief Judicial Magistrate, South Andaman-cum-Secretary, DLSA, A&N Islands, Ms. Preeja Menon, Advocate and panel member of DLSA, A&N Islands, and members and volunteers of IHRCCO.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sudhir Kumar underscored the significance of legal awareness in empowering women and senior citizens. He elaborated on the legal safeguards provided under various legislations, including the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. He also highlighted the crucial role of the DLSA in ensuring access to justice by providing free legal aid, mediation services, and legal support to vulnerable sections of society.

Ms. Saraswati Narayan, State President of IHRCCO, A&N Islands, briefed attendees about the organization’s mission to safeguard human rights and uphold justice for all. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Vimala Venkatesh, State Vice President of IHRCCO, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and participants for their valuable contributions.

The initiative aimed to enhance legal literacy among women and senior citizens, reinforcing their rights and access to justice in society.
