In accordance with the regulations stipulated under Section 135 C of the Representation of the People Act 1951, coupled with Rule 86 of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Excise Regulation 2012, the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has issued an official directive designating specific days as ‘Dry Days’ across the entirety of the archipelago.
The designated ‘Dry Days’ are as follows:
1. For Polling: From 17/04/2024 (06:00 PM Onwards) to 19/04/2024 (Poll Day) (till 06:00 PM)
2. For Counting: On 4th of June 2024 (Entire Day)
During these periods, no establishments including liquor shops, hotels, restaurants, clubs, or any other entities engaged in the sale or service of alcoholic beverages shall be allowed to vend or serve alcohol to any individual.
This directive also extends to all entities possessing IMFL vending licenses, encompassing ANIIDCO, CSD Units (Unit Running Canteens), all Defence Canteens, Police Mess, and private bar licensees operating within the territory.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. B S Jaglan, IAS, has issued explicit instructions to all relevant authorities to diligently enforce the declared ‘Dry Days’ in both letter and spirit. This directive aims to facilitate the conduct of smooth, free, and fair elections within the Union Territory.
This proclamation underscores the commitment of election authorities to uphold the sanctity and integrity of the electoral process, ensuring that the democratic exercise proceeds unhindered by the influence of alcohol consumption during critical phases of polling and counting.
