The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, commemorated the 62nd National Maritime Day with a series of solemn and spirited events, celebrating India’s maritime legacy while championing the role of youth in shaping a sustainable future.

This year’s theme, “Samriddh Sagar – Viksit Bharat Yevam Neel Arth Aur Harit Vikas Ke Liye Yuva” (Prosperous Ocean – For a Developed India, Blue Economy and Green Growth through Youth), underscored the crucial involvement of young people in driving blue economy initiatives and fostering eco-friendly maritime practices.

The day began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Capt. Beal, a tribute to the maritime pioneers whose contributions laid the foundation of seafaring in the Islands. The solemn occasion was attended by senior DSS officials, including Director Mr. Parvesh Ranjan Jha and Deputy Director, along with representatives from the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), Boat Owners’ Associations, DSS staff, and other maritime stakeholders.

Later, participants gathered at Choulanga Jetty, Marine Dockyard, where the Red Insign Flag was ceremoniously hoisted by Mr. Jha. Addressing the gathering, both the Director and Deputy Director highlighted the relevance of National Maritime Day in recognising the nation’s maritime achievements and reaffirmed DSS’s commitment to advancing green growth and youth involvement in the maritime sector.

A spirited Tug of War competition between the Afloat and Dockyard Sections of DSS added a festive note to the celebration, with the Afloat Section emerging victorious. The friendly contest fostered camaraderie and team spirit among staff members.

Demonstrating the Directorate’s continued focus on environmental sustainability, a tree-planting ceremony was also held at Marine Dockyard. The symbolic gesture reinforced DSS’s dedication to eco-conscious practices and a greener maritime future.

The observance concluded with a reaffirmation of DSS’s commitment to maritime excellence, sustainable development, and empowering youth as key stakeholders in building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). (Story Based on PR)
