In a move aimed at strengthening inter-island transport and easing pressure on existing maritime resources, the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has initiated the process to charter three 50-passenger vessels for deployment across key inland waterways of Diglipur, Long Island and the Nancowry region.
According to DSS, the decision is part of an ongoing effort to ensure smoother, more reliable and punctual harbour connectivity. The new vessels are expected to significantly improve routine services for daily commuters, reduce the load on the ageing fleet and enhance overall stability of services.
As the principal public transport lifeline of the Islands, DSS continues to play a crucial role in supporting mobility, livelihoods and access to essential services across the archipelago. Rising demand and increasing operational challenges have prompted the department to proactively expand capacity to ensure uninterrupted movement for residents.
To operationalise the initiative, tenders inviting competent firms to participate were published on 3 December 2025 on the A&N Administration’s official e-procurement portal.
DSS reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, efficient and welfare-oriented maritime services, ensuring essential connectivity remains strong and accessible for the island community. (Story Based on PR)
