In a dedicated observance of the 57th International Literacy Day, the Education Department of Andaman & Nicobar organised a state-level function on September 8, 2023. The event was the culmination of a week-long program that ran from September 1st to September 7th, 2023, held at the auditorium of the Government Girls Senior Secondary School. The week-long celebration featured a series of competitions, including Essay Writing, Painting, Poster Making, and Slogan Writing, in which students from various schools in Port Blair actively participated.
The function, held at Shiksha Sadan, was graced by the presence of Ms. Pallavi Sarkar, IAS, Secretary of Education, and Mr. Aditya Kumar Jha, Director of Education, alongside other distinguished officers, teachers, and students. Ms. Sarkar, in her role as Secretary of Education, personally distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of the diverse competitions conducted throughout the week. She took the opportunity to convey her blessings to the students and expressed her appreciation for the dedicated efforts of both teachers and officers in making the event a success.
Director Aditya Kumar Jha underscored the importance of International Literacy Day and used the occasion to urge teachers and students to participate in the mission of educating non-literates through an “Each One-Teach One” approach. He emphasised that this initiative could serve as a pilot project towards the eradication of illiteracy in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Director Jha also highlighted the launch of a newly introduced centrally sponsored scheme for literacy called “ULLAS-Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.” This initiative aims to achieve the ambitious goal of 100% literacy in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The celebration of International Literacy Day not only acknowledges the importance of education but also reinforces the commitment of the Andaman & Nicobar Education Department to fostering literacy and spreading the light of knowledge throughout the region. Through such initiatives, the administration aims to create a brighter and more literate future for all its residents.
