Electricity Department is undertaking significant measures to enhance the power supply across Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Key initiatives include improved relay coordination among stations to isolate faulty feeders and prevent faults from spreading to power houses and sub-stations, thereby preventing grid collapse. Additionally, extensive HT/LT line clearances in tie lines and feeders have been carried out through outsourcing to boost reliability.
To address the increasing peak demand, two new power plants with capacities of 10 MW and 5 MW have been installed at Bambooflat under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Furthermore, two Battery Energy Storage projects are scheduled to be commissioned by 2026 to enhance grid stability and manage solar intermittency.
In a long-term effort to ensure a stable power supply, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), directed by the Ministry of Power (MoP), plans to extend the National Grid to the A&N Islands via a 320 KV, 250 MW HVDC undersea cable, expected by 2029-30. Additionally, the Ministry has engaged SECI and NVVN to implement various renewable energy projects to ensure energy security in the region.
To address power-related grievances efficiently, a Centralized Control Room (CCR) has been established, operating 24/7. Consumers can lodge complaints through a toll-free number (1800-345-1111) or a WhatsApp number (9531822200), both functional round-the-clock. The complaints are processed through the Consumer Complaint Handling Mechanism (CCHM) and directed to the relevant site offices for prompt resolution.
In line with modernisation efforts, a new contract for a 5 MW power plant featuring more efficient engines and breakers has necessitated the closure of an existing 5 MW plant at the same location. The old plant ceased operations on June 8, 2024, and the installation of the new plant is expected to take approximately 60 days.
During periods of low demand, particularly in the current season, the Power Department manages the balance between supply and demand by isolating certain feeders during evening peak hours if necessary.
The Department emphasises the collective responsibility of both service providers and consumers to conserve power, aiming to minimise load shedding. An appeal is made to the public for judicious power usage, especially avoiding high-consumption appliances during peak hours.
Despite facing numerous challenges, the Electricity Department remains committed to maintaining a steady power supply with minimal interruptions. Their efforts are focused on effective Demand Side Management (DSM) and optimising the existing infrastructure to meet consumer needs.
For any power-related issues, consumers are encouraged to contact the department via the toll-free number 1800-345-1111 or WhatsApp at 9531822200.
