Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U 2.0), aimed at providing affordable housing to one crore urban poor and middle-class families over the next five years.

The ambitious scheme, which comes into effect from September 1, 2024, will offer financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh per housing unit. The support will be extended through States, Union Territories, and Primary Lending Institutions (PLIs) to enable eligible families to construct, purchase, or rent homes in urban areas.

Under PMAY-U 2.0, a beneficiary family is defined as a unit comprising a husband, wife, and unmarried children. To qualify, the family must belong to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Lower Income Group (LIG), or Middle Income Group (MIG), and must not own a pucca (all-weather) house anywhere in India.

The scheme will be implemented through four key verticals:

• Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC)

• Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP)

• Affordable Rental Housing (ARH)

• Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS)

These verticals offer flexibility, allowing applicants and implementing agencies to choose the most suitable option based on individual requirements and local conditions.

Citizens are encouraged to apply through the official PMAY-Urban web portal: https://pmay-urban.gov.in. Applicants are advised to carefully read the detailed guidelines available on the website before submitting their applications.

The launch of PMAY-U 2.0 underscores the government’s continued commitment to “Housing for All,” with a renewed focus on inclusivity, affordability, and urban development.
