In a swift police action, a suspect was arrested late at night on September 13, 2024, in connection with the brutal murder of a furniture shop owner. The accused, Rajkumar Sarkar, allegedly killed the victim, identified as a local shop owner, following a heated argument at his residence in Kalighat. The police investigation began after receiving information from a terrified witness, which eventually led to the apprehension of the accused in the early hours of September 14.

The incident occurred on the evening of September 13, when the victim arrived at Rajkumar’s residence, where Rajkumar and the witness were engaged in a conversation. According to the police, the victim, who had employed Rajkumar as a carpenter, objected to the presence of a third person at Rajkumar’s residence. The disagreement quickly escalated into violence, with Rajkumar allegedly grabbing an axe and striking the victim on the head. The severe injury resulted in the victim’s immediate death.

The assailant then attempted to dispose of the body in a nearby bush, but the witness, who was present during the argument, fled the scene and informed both his family and the police about the incident. Based on the information provided, the Kalighat police immediately swung into action.

Under the supervision of Station House Officer (SHO) SI Ashok Baghel, a police team was dispatched to the crime scene, where they located the victim’s body near Rajkumar’s residence. An FIR was promptly registered, and the investigation was launched under the direction of Mr. Ankesh Yadav, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Diglipur. The team worked through the night, combing potential escape routes, and successfully apprehended the accused in the Kalara area as he attempted to flee.

A forensic team was called in to assist with the investigation. The weapon used in the crime, along with other pieces of evidence, was seized, further bolstering the case against the accused. Rajkumar Sarkar, a resident of Nabagram, was produced in court at Mayabunder on September 14, where he was remanded to judicial custody.

The prompt response of the police team, operating under the leadership of Ms. Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, Superintendent of Police, North & Middle Andaman District, ensured that the accused was brought to justice within hours of the crime.
