The Government of India’s initiative to consolidate emergency helplines into a single, unified system has led to the successful rollout of the 112 emergency number across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Emergency Response Support System (ERSS)-112, which was introduced in 2019, provides residents with a streamlined way to access critical emergency services during any crisis.
ERSS-112 serves as a comprehensive, island-wide response system, allowing immediate access to vital services such as Police (100), Fire (101), Health (102), and Disaster Management. This integration under a single number simplifies the process of getting help in emergencies.
Key Features of ERSS-112:
-24/7 Accessibility: Residents can dial 112 for assistance, press the power button thrice on any smartphone, or long-press the “5” or “9” key on a regular phone to initiate a panic call to the dedicated DIAL 112 Control Room.
- Digital Communication: SOS alerts can also be sent via email or through the 112 India mobile app, available for free on both Google Play Store and Apple Store.
– Dedicated Control Room: The DIAL 112 service is managed by a dedicated Control Room staffed with trained call-takers and dispatchers. This facility is linked to Emergency Response Vehicles and various departmental control rooms, ensuring timely assistance to those in need.
Recent Developments in ERSS-112:
The ERSS in Port Blair is currently undergoing significant enhancements, including the transition to a workforce fully composed of police personnel. Recent training sessions have equipped five female police officers with advanced skills in handling emergency calls and improving their soft skills. Presently, police personnel make up one-third of the ERSS staffing, with efforts underway to increase this number.
In addition, a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is in the consultation phase, aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the handling of emergency calls. This SOP will establish clear guidelines to ensure optimal service delivery.
The ERSS-112 system is also being integrated with other important helplines, such as Cyber Crime (1930) and Narcotics, to further streamline emergency responses. Integration with the CHILDLINE 1098 is in progress, and a system is being developed to enable the transfer of calls to related helplines, including those for women and cyber issues, through a web-based dispatcher system.
ERSS-112 handles approximately 150 calls daily, with around 20% of these requiring an immediate response. The public is encouraged to register on the 112 India mobile app and utilize the ERSS-112 service in any emergency situation.
