The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are stepping into the future of tourism with the launch of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) documentaries that offer visitors a vivid glimpse into the region’s rich culture, traditions and natural beauty.

The initiative, launched by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration through the Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism (IP&T), uses cutting-edge VR technology to showcase the islands like never before. Chief Secretary Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, virtually launched the project at the Secretariat in the presence of senior officers of the Administration.

Through high-quality aerial shots, live footage and 360-degree visuals, the VR documentaries take viewers deep into the heart of the Nicobar Islands, highlighting the unique lifestyle of the Nicobarese tribal communities. The films feature Kamorta and Nancowry Harbour, capturing everyday village life, traditional homes, maritime livelihoods and long-preserved social practices of the indigenous people.

A major highlight of the series is the colourful Hodi Race Festival, a traditional boat race that reflects the Nicobarese community’s strong seafaring heritage, spirit of unity and teamwork passed down through generations.

Alongside the Nicobar-focused content, a separate 360-degree VR documentary presents the Andaman Islands’ pristine beaches, dense forests and vibrant marine ecosystems, allowing viewers to virtually explore the islands’ vast eco-tourism potential.

To make the experience easily accessible, the documentaries—produced in both Hindi and English—are being screened inside a mobile VR theatre set up in a specially designed bus. The bus has been stationed along the Marina stretch, in front of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, where tourists and the general public can enjoy the immersive experience.

Officials believe the initiative will help visitors make more informed travel choices, boost tourist engagement and play a key role in promoting the islands’ cultural and natural heritage at the global level.

The VR project underlines the Administration’s focus on sustainable tourism, cultural preservation and the use of modern technology to connect people with the unique identity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
