In a significant move towards strengthening forensic infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Finger Print Cell (CID) of Andaman and Nicobar Police, in coordination with the Police Training School (PTS), Prothrapur, conducted a two-day hands-on training programme on the Measurement Collection Unit (MCU) under the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022.

The training programme was held on February 19 and 20 at PTS Prothrapur, Sri Vijaya Puram, under the guidance of senior officers and in coordination with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), New Delhi. The initiative aims to transition from manual record-keeping practices to a modern, unified identification system aligned with national standards.

A specialised team from NCRB delivered both theoretical sessions and practical demonstrations on the functioning and implementation of the MCU system. The training team included Mr. Anupam Karmakar, Senior Technical Officer; Ms. Aparna Sengupta, Project Leader; Mr. Raman Prasad, Junior Technical Officer; and Mr. Tejas Dipak Chaudhari, Project Engineer. They were assisted by Inspector T.K. William, Finger Print Expert, and HC/172 T. Ravi Kumar, MCU Enroller and Finger Print Expert.

A total of 40 participants attended the workshop, comprising police personnel from the rank of Head Constable to Inspector, along with Scientific Officers from the Forensic Science Laboratory, Sri Vijaya Puram.

The Criminal Procedure Identification System marks a major advancement in modern policing. The MCU facilitates the collection of 360-degree photographs, iris scans, DNA samples and other physical measurements, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of identification processes.

The MCU system is now operational at the Finger Print Cell, three District Police Offices, and correctional institutions including the District Jail and Sub-Jails across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
