FIR Registered Against Captain of Cargo Ship ITT Jaguar for Hitting an Engine Dinghy Mid Sea

Cargo Ship ITT Jaguar on 02 May 2023, hit an engine dinghy mid-sea near Madhuban in South Andaman during the early morning hours.

The Engine Dinghy (Ganga Sagar) immediately capsized and the two men onboard swam for nearly four hours and reached the shore of Madhuban, from where they were rescued by Coast Guard Helicopter.

The Engine Dinghy was carrying Cargo for Havelock Island. The Dinghy was hit when it had stopped mid-sea as a fishing net got stuck in its propeller resulting in the engine shutting down.

An FIR has been registered at PS Bambooflat against the Captain of the Cargo Ship ITT Jaguar under Section 280 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Section 280 IPC deals with Rash navigation of vessel—Whoever navigates any vessel in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life, or to be likely to cause hurt or injury to any other person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both.
