Fire Safety Drill Conducted at Nirman Bhawan-APWD

In line with the directive of the Chief Secretary, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, mandating quarterly mock drills across all departments, the Directorate of Disaster Management conducted a fire drill at Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), Nirman Bhawan, Sri Vijaya Puram, on Monday. The exercise aimed to enhance fire safety preparedness within the office premises.

As part of the drill, a simulated fire scenario was created in the building at 11:00 AM. A fire alert was issued, triggering an immediate evacuation of the office. The APWD coordinated with the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC – South Andaman), Fire Department, Police, Electricity, and Health Departments to manage the situation.

Following the evacuation, search and rescue operations were conducted by response teams from APWD, Fire Department, Police, and Aapda Mitras. First aid was provided to the injured, and those requiring further medical attention were transported to the hospital via ambulance.

A debriefing session was held at 11:30 AM with 170 staff members, officials, and representatives from various resource departments. During the session, the Incident Commander of APWD underscored the importance of regular mock drills in strengthening disaster preparedness. He also commended the coordinated efforts of all participating teams in ensuring the drill’s success.

Such exercises are crucial in equipping government offices with the necessary skills and response mechanisms to handle emergencies effectively.
