In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) is set to launch a special cruise to Barren Island — India’s only active volcano — aboard the passenger vessel Sindhu. The vessel will set sail tonight at 9 PM, offering passengers an exclusive opportunity to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary wonders amid the stunning expanse of the Andaman Sea.
As dawn breaks, travellers will be treated to a spectacular sunrise over Barren Island — a rare visual delight where the golden hues of morning light reveal the island’s volcanic cone and the shimmering waters surrounding it.
According to DSS, this exclusive voyage marks a new milestone in the Administration’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable and experience-based tourism in the islands. The round-trip cruise will depart from Sri Vijaya Puram, combining adventure, leisure, and education in a single journey.
Cruise Highlights:
- Coastal Viewing: Guided sightseeing of Barren Island’s volcanic cone from the vessel (no landing).
- Sunrise Experience: A photographer’s dream, offering an unforgettable view of the island at daybreak.
- Onboard Amenities: Freshly prepared meals, telescope viewing, games, and a mini library.
- Entertainment: Onboard DJ, live performance by a local artist, and curated music for all ages.
- Safety & Comfort: Experienced crew, life-saving equipment, and strict adherence to maritime safety standards.
Passenger embarkation will begin at 1900 hrs at Haddo Wharf and close strictly at 2030 hrs. Travellers have been advised to report well in advance to complete boarding formalities, as late arrivals will not be permitted.
