The District Administration of Nicobar, in collaboration with the Tribal Council, Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), and the Rural Development Department, organised the first-ever ‘Tribal Haat’ in Campbell Bay on Saturday.

The event was inaugurated by Assistant Commissioner Dr. Keshav Singh and Block Development Officer Shekhar Rai, in the presence of Barnabas Manju, Chairman of the Tribal Council for Great and Little Nicobar Islands.

The Tribal Haat featured stalls set up by tribal Self-Help Groups (SHGs), showcasing locally made products such as virgin coconut oil, the traditional Nicobari hodi (canoe), hand-embroidered pillows, bamboo and cane baskets, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Traditional ethnic food items were also available, attracting participation from various sections of the local community.

According to the administration, the event aims to support tribal artisans and farmers by providing them with direct market access, encouraging sustainable livelihoods and the continuation of traditional crafts.

Following the positive response, officials announced that the Tribal Haat will now be held on the 15th of every month in Campbell Bay. (Story Based on PR)
