The Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, has notified designated sea areas for leasing to undertake fish culture, including seaweed cultivation and the installation of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs). The notification has been issued under Section 4 of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Marine Fishing Regulation, 2003, read with Rule 15 of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Marine Fishing Rules, 2004.
The initiative aims to promote mariculture activities such as open sea cage culture, seaweed farming, pearl culture, and installation of FADs across the islands. According to the department, the move is intended to create sustainable livelihood opportunities, enhance marine fish production through eco-friendly and scientifically managed practices, and ensure responsible utilization of the rich marine resources of the islands.
The official notification, dated September 19, 2025, has been published in the Andaman & Nicobar Gazette. It can be accessed on the Administration’s website (andamannicobar.gov.in) as well as the Department of Fisheries website (anifisheries.andamannicobar.gov.in).
