The Department of Fisheries has issued a stern warning against the use of harmful chemicals for fishing in the South Andaman District, following reports of individuals resorting to such illegal practices in local ponds and nallahs.
The department stated that some fishers, fish farmers, and members of the public have been using toxic substances to render fish unconscious for easier capture. This method, however, has severe environmental consequences, polluting water bodies and posing a serious threat to the food chain, as toxins from contaminated fish can enter human consumption.
According to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Marine Fishing Rules, the use of chemicals for fishing is a serious offence. The Fisheries Department has advised all stakeholders to strictly refrain from such activities, emphasizing the need for responsible and sustainable fishing practices.
Authorities have also warned that violators will face strict action under the applicable regulations. The department has urged the public to cooperate in preserving the marine ecosystem and ensuring the long-term sustainability of local fish populations.
For any concerns or to report illegal fishing activities, residents are encouraged to contact the Fisheries Department.
