The Food Safety Department has recently shut down a restaurant in Bhathu Basthi, Sri Vijaya Puram, after reports surfaced of rat infestation affecting cakes and sweet items displayed for sale. Acting on a tip-off, Food Safety Officials conducted an inspection, revealing serious violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, as well as the Rules and Regulations of 2011.

The inspection highlighted that the Food Business Operator had neglected pest control measures, leading to evidence of pest and rodent activity within the premises. Following these findings, officials invoked Section 32 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and ordered the immediate closure of the establishment. All food business activities on the premises have been suspended until further notice in the interest of public health.

The Food Safety Department has confirmed that further adjudication is underway against the restaurant operator for these violations. Additionally, a special hygiene drive is being conducted during the festive season to ensure the quality and safety of sweets and other festive delicacies.

The Commissioner of Food Safety, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has issued a stern directive to all Food Business Operators to comply strictly with FSS Rules and Regulations, warning that any violators will face action as stipulated in the Act.
