Nicobar Division Forest Department on 24th of July 2022 organised Monsoon Festival at Anderson Beach, Joginder Nagar, Campbell Bay. The event saw the participation of a large number of people.
Mr. E S Rajesh, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Campbell Bay was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Pradhans of all three Panchayats also attended the function. Chairperson, Tribal Council of Great Nicobar and Little Nicobar also attended the Monsoon Festival.
Several games such as Tug of War, Beach Volleyball, Musical Chair, Passing the Ball, Climbing Chair and 100 Mtrs Sprint were organised on the occasion and the residents of Great Nicobar participated enthusiastically and enjoyed the event.
Mr. Ayub Hassan, DFO, Nicobar Division (FD) informed Nicobar Times that Monsoon Festival will encourage the local people to start Sustainable Tourism Activities in their local areas. He added that beaches can be used in many different sustainable ways by the villagers to earn their livelihood.
Mr. Ayub Hassan further added that Self Help Groups, Individuals etc. can start small temporary shops near beaches which will attract locals during weekends and will be a source of income for the entrepreneurs. He asserted that there is a scope for tourism even in rural areas and the locals need to understand and explore it.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of various games organised during the event.
The event by Nicobar Division Forest Department was a great hit among the locals. Residents demanded that the Forest Department should organise more such events regularly. Some residents also suggested that Cultural Programmes should be added next time to the Monsoon Festival and the event should continue until late at night.
