The Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has commenced the distribution of fortified rice across various welfare schemes, following directives from the Government of India. This initiative targets beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS), Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), and the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Scheme, previously known as the mid-day meal scheme.
The fortified rice is enriched with essential nutrients, including iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, to address anaemia among children and women. This enrichment aims to improve overall health and nutritional outcomes for these vulnerable groups.
To ensure the effectiveness of the fortification process, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines are being rigorously followed by suppliers and distributors. Despite these measures, some consumers have mistakenly identified the white granules in the fortified rice as plastic or foreign materials. The Department assures that these granules are harmless and are simply added to boost the rice’s nutritional value.
In addition to distribution efforts, the Department is organizing awareness camps in Panchayats to educate the public about the benefits of fortified rice. For any queries or concerns, consumers are encouraged to contact their local Civil Supply Offices or call the toll-free number 03192-230337.
