The Department of Transport, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, in collaboration with the State Bank of India (SBI) and its Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI), has launched a new scheme titled ‘SARATHINI’. The initiative is aimed at empowering women by providing free Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) driving training, particularly targeting those from poor and underprivileged backgrounds.
Under the scheme, women aged 18 and above will be eligible to apply, with preference given to Scheduled Tribe (ST) women, women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, members of Self Help Groups (SHGs), and women from families registered under MGNREGA who have completed at least 35 workdays in the past year.
Officials said that the initiative marks a significant step towards promoting women’s empowerment and skill development in the Islands. By equipping women with professional driving skills, the programme aims to open avenues for employment and self-reliance, enabling beneficiaries to explore both job opportunities and self-employment.
The Department of Transport has invited eligible women to submit applications in the prescribed format, available on its official website. Applications must be addressed to the Director (Transport), Directorate of Transport, Sri Vijaya Puram, and submitted within seven days.
For further details or assistance, applicants may contact the Transport Department at 03192-243532 or email rtoani.and@nic.in.
