A girl student was found dead in the Jawaharlal Nehru Rajyakiya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) Girls’ Hostel at Sri Vijaya Puram on Friday, triggering shock and concern on the college campus. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which is suspected to be a case of suicide.

According to sources, the deceased has been identified as Kripa Malakar, a resident of Jaganath Dera, Diglipur. She was pursuing BSc in Geography at JNRM and was residing in the girls’ hostel.

Hostel staff informed that the student had attended college in the morning and returned to the hostel later in the day, after which the incident reportedly occurred. Following information about the incident, police personnel rushed to the spot and a police vehicle was seen stationed inside the hostel.

Relatives of the student, including her cousin brother, were informed and reached the hostel. Hostel guards also confirmed the incident when contacted. Sources further revealed that the student was found hanging with a rope. However, the exact reason behind the extreme step is not yet known.

Friends of the deceased reportedly told that she appeared upset since morning, though no clear reason for her distress has so far emerged.

The incident occurred on a day when Saraswati Puja is being celebrated across the college and other parts of the islands, turning a day of celebration into one of mourning for students and staff.

Notably, this is the second reported suicide case linked to the hostel, raising serious concerns over student wellbeing and mental health support systems in educational institutions.
