In an effort to enhance the income of farmers, the Government of India has initiated the Central Sector Scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi’ (PM-KISAN) during the financial year 2018-19. This scheme, which is fully funded by the government, aims to provide financial assistance to eligible farmer families.

Under PM-KISAN, each eligible farmer family receives a financial benefit of ₹6,000 per year, disbursed in three equal installments of ₹2,000 every four months. The primary objective of the scheme is to support farmers in acquiring necessary agricultural inputs to ensure optimal crop health and yield, thereby aligning with their expected farm income.

The Agriculture Department has been appointed as the Nodal Department for the implementation of PM-KISAN, with the Director of Agriculture serving as the State Nodal Officer overseeing the PM-KISAN Portal. At the district level, all Deputy Commissioners have been designated as District Level Nodal Officers, while Block Level Monitoring and Implementation Committees are headed by the respective Assistant Director of Agriculture.

On October 5, 2024, Prime Minister released the 18th installment of PM-KISAN, benefitting a total of 16,506 farmers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This continued support underscores the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of farmers and bolstering agricultural productivity.
