The Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, has launched the second phase of a nationwide campaign to register Gig and Platform Workers on the e-Shram portal. Scheduled to run from May 21 to 30, 2025, the campaign aims to ensure that eligible workers and their families receive health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).

The campaign, announced as part of the Union Budget 2025-26, focuses on extending formal recognition and social security benefits to workers engaged in the gig and platform economy—sectors rapidly growing across India.

Who Are Gig and Platform Workers?

According to the Ministry, Platform Workers are individuals who provide services or solve problems via online platforms, often outside the scope of traditional employment contracts. Gig Workers are those who earn through short-term or flexible work arrangements that also lie outside the conventional employer-employee structure.

Local Efforts in A&N Islands

To facilitate this campaign locally, the Labour Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Sri Vijaya Puram, has established a Special Registration Cell. All eligible workers are urged to take advantage of the facility to ensure they are covered under key welfare schemes.

Workers can also self-register by visiting the official portal: https://register.eshram.gov.in/#/user/platform-worker-registration
