The remote island of Great Nicobar is once again grappling with an LPG crisis, just three months after residents had staged protests over the same issue. Despite assurances from the local administration in Campbell Bay that LPG cylinders would be supplied on time, the problem has resurfaced, causing distress among the islanders.

On 28th January 2025, the General Secretary of BJP, Campbell Bay Mandal along with local youth associated with BJP, met the Assistant Commissioner of Campbell Bay to address the issue. The official cited the unavailability of a ship to transport LPG cylinders from Sri Vijaya Puram to Campbell Bay as the reason for the crisis.

In a bid to expedite a resolution, Mr. Prahlad Singh, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Laxmi Nagar, and Ms. Leela Bathi, Zilla Parishad Member of Laxmi Nagar, met with the Deputy Director of Civil Supplies at Sri Vijaya Puram. The official assured them that LPG cylinders would begin loading onto a ship for transport to Campbell Bay starting 30th January 2025. Mr. Prahlad Singh informed Nicobar Times that a total of 2,500 cylinders would be dispatched to ease the shortage.

Seeking a long-term solution, Mr. Prahlad Singh and Ms. Leela Bathi urged the Deputy Director of Civil Supplies to address the recurring LPG shortage permanently. They also met the Secretary of CCS Ltd. to discuss the crisis and explore sustainable solutions for ensuring an uninterrupted LPG supply to Great Nicobar.

The residents of Great Nicobar remain hopeful that authorities will implement a lasting fix to prevent future disruptions.
