Port Blair, 25 May 2024

Directorate of Disaster Management has issued a warning that heavy rain and squally winds, exceeding speeds of 40 km/h, are expected to continue in the coming days across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These adverse weather conditions pose a risk of damaging the region’s Transmission & Distribution (T&D) systems.

Residents, consumers of the Electricity Department, and government departments have been urged to promptly report any incidents related to electrical faults. This includes fallen trees or branches on transmission lines, toppled electric poles, broken high tension (HT) or low tension (LT) lines on the ground, or any visible flashes within the T&D system. Reports should be made to the respective Site Offices, the Electricity Central Control Room at the toll-free number 1800-345-1111, or the nearest police station.

The public is strongly advised to maintain a safe distance from any snapped conductors, cables, and electric poles to prevent accidents. The Electricity Department has assured that its officers and staff are committed to responding quickly to repair any damages caused by the severe weather and to restore power supply as swiftly as possible.

The cooperation of the general public in reporting issues and staying safe is highly appreciated. This advisory was issued via a press release.
