Hindu Rashtra Shakti has formally requested the Hon’ble Lt Governor to declare Chhath Puja as a public holiday in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In a letter addressed to the Lt Governor, the organization highlighted the cultural, religious, and social significance of Chhath Puja, which is celebrated over four days and is especially observed by people from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and other regions of India. The festival, dedicated to the Sun God, involves family prayers, holy dips in water, and rituals aimed at promoting environmental harmony.

The letter emphasized that in the islands, the festival is celebrated with enthusiasm by communities including the Bhojpuri Samaj, Uttar Pradesh Samaj, Bihar Samaj, and Jharkhand Samaj. Key rituals are performed at beaches such as Corbyn’s Cove Beach, accompanied by cultural programs, folk songs, and community feasts.

According to Hindu Rashtra Shakti, declaring Chhath Puja a public holiday would allow devotees, including government and private employees as well as students, to participate freely in the festivities, while promoting cultural unity and social cohesion.

The letter has also been copied to the Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, and the Secretary (GA).

State President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti, Rakeshwar Lall, expressed hope for a positive decision that would bring “immense joy and relief to the residents” observing the festival.
