Hindu Rashtra Shakti, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has urged the Administration to order an immediate and comprehensive enquiry into two suicide cases reported at the Girls’ Hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) over the past months.

In a representation addressed to the Lieutenant Governor, the Chief Secretary, and the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman), Mr. Angshuman Roy, State Youth President, HRS expressed grave concern over the incidents, stating that they have caused widespread anxiety among students, parents and the public. One of the cases reportedly involved a student of the Geography Department and occurred on January 23, 2026, within the hostel premises.

The organisation stated that the occurrence of two such incidents within a short span points to possible underlying issues such as mental stress, academic pressure, shortcomings in hostel administration, or the absence of adequate counselling and emotional support systems. It emphasised that educational institutions, particularly residential hostels, have a moral and administrative responsibility to ensure the safety, security and mental well-being of students living away from their families.

Calling for urgent intervention, Hindu Rashtra Shakti requested a thorough, impartial and time-bound enquiry to ascertain the circumstances that led to both incidents. The representation also sought a review of the functioning of the hostel administration, supervision mechanisms, grievance redressal systems and overall student welfare arrangements at JNRM.

The organisation further suggested the regular deployment of qualified counsellors and mental health professionals for hostel residents, along with structured interaction between hostel authorities, faculty members and students. It also recommended awareness programmes on mental health, stress management and coping mechanisms, as well as strengthening monitoring, mentoring and security arrangements within the hostel.

Urging the authorities to act with urgency and sensitivity, the organisation said that transparent enquiry proceedings and prompt corrective measures would help restore confidence among students and parents and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
