The State Youth President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti, Angshuman Roy, has submitted a representation to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, urging the Administration to adopt stringent preventive measures against drunk driving in the Union Territory.
In his proposal, Roy referenced the recent initiative by Gurugram Police, which issued an advisory to bars, pubs and clubs under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), mandating strict checks on patrons leaving under the influence of alcohol and requiring establishments to ensure safe transport arrangements for highly intoxicated customers. The advisory also directs establishments to display clear warnings in parking areas regarding the risks and legal consequences associated with drunk driving, with non-compliance inviting strict action.
Highlighting the increasing tourist arrivals and growing nightlife activities in Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island), the representation emphasised the need for proactive measures to enhance public safety on the roads. Roy proposed that bars, restaurants and resorts serving alcohol be instructed to prevent intoxicated patrons from driving, assist in arranging taxis or alternate transport, train staff and security to handle such situations responsibly, and maintain coordination with local police.
He stated that implementing such measures through a proper legal framework would significantly reduce drunk driving incidents and reinforce trust in the Administration’s commitment to ensuring a safe nightlife environment in the Islands.
