In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on the evening of September 17, 2023, a hit-and-run accident on Madhupur Road in Diglipur, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, resulted in the tragic death of a pedestrian. The police swiftly responded to the complaint and managed to apprehend the suspect within just 24 hours.
The incident was reported to the Diglipur Police Station on the evening of September 17 by Mr. Subrata Halder, a resident of Subashgram, Diglipur. According to Mr. Halder, his friend, Mr. Ashim Das, a resident of Jalpaiguni, West Bengal, was walking along the left side of the main road at approximately 8:15 pm when tragedy struck. An auto-rickshaw, traveling at a high speed from the direction of Laxmipur, collided with Mr. Das. The impact of the collision caused Mr. Das to fall to the ground, hitting his head severely.
Tragically, due to the darkness on the road and the absence of street lights, Mr. Halder was unable to discern the registration number of the fleeing auto-rickshaw. The driver of the auto-rickshaw fled the scene, leaving Mr. Das critically injured and unconscious. Mr. Das was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his head injuries.
Upon receiving Mr. Halder’s complaint, an FIR was promptly registered at the Diglipur Police Station, and a specialised team was assembled, led by Inspector K. Binoj, the Station House Officer (SHO) of PS Diglipur. The dedicated team launched an exhaustive investigation, utilising both physical and technical analysis techniques to trace the hit-and-run driver.
Remarkably, within just 24 hours of registering the FIR, the police team successfully cracked the case and apprehended the alleged culprit. The suspect has been identified as Mr. Parimal Das, aged 34, and a resident of Ward No. 01 in Shibpur, Diglipur. He has been booked under the relevant sections of the law.
This operation was carried out under the able supervision of Dr. C.P. Meena (DANIPS), the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Diglipur, and received overall guidance from Ms. Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, the Superintendent of Police for the North & Middle Andaman District.
