In response to growing concerns over the escalating monkey menace in Great Nicobar and other tribal areas, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has stepped in and directed the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to take immediate and appropriate action.

The directive, issued on July 15, 2025, follows a formal representation by Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, highlighting the hardships faced by local residents due to the increasing population of monkeys in the region.

The MHA has instructed the UT Administration to consult with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to formulate preventive measures and initiate suitable steps to mitigate the problem. Additionally, the UT Administration has been asked to furnish a comprehensive response to the Hon’ble MP, with a copy to be submitted to the Home Ministry.

The intervention comes amid rising complaints from locals about crop damage, property destruction, and potential threats to public safety due to the unchecked monkey population in the ecologically sensitive areas of Great Nicobar.
