Humfrygunj Police Apprehends Man for Illegal Wildlife Trade, Seizes 161 Kg Venison

Humfrygunj police have apprehended an individual involved in illegal wildlife trade and seized 161 kg of venison (deer meat) in a swift operation at Wandoor Fish Landing Centre.

Acting on a tip-off, police received credible information on February 16, 2025, at 9:00 PM about an individual transporting venison illegally using a fishing dinghy. The vessel was expected to arrive at Wandoor Fish Landing Centre. In response, Station House Officer (SHO) Subramani of Police Station Humfrygunj formed a team comprising PCs Raja, Sanjib Kumar Shil, and Periyaswamy to intercept the suspect.

At approximately 9:50 PM, an engine-powered dinghy bearing Registration No. IND-AN-SA-MO-407 reached the jetty. The police team swiftly approached the vessel and conducted an inspection. During the search, an icebox containing three plastic gunny bags filled with red meat, suspected to be venison, was found.

In the presence of independent witnesses, the meat was weighed and confirmed to be 161 kg. The dinghy, along with the contraband, was seized, and the operator, identified as Deen Bandhu Das (28), son of Late Paritosh Das, a fisherman from New Wandoor, was apprehended following due legal formalities.

Subsequently, the seized venison, dinghy, and the accused were handed over to forest officials for further legal proceedings.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Mr. Rahul L. Nair, IPS. Authorities have urged the public to report any illegal activities by calling 236641, 287590, or 112. The identity of informers will be kept confidential.
