A Field Day focused on the “Controlled Breeding Programme and Artificial Insemination in Goats” was held by the ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI) at Nayagarh village, Baratang, on November 30, 2024. The event was part of the AICRP on Goat Improvement Project and was attended by 20 local goat farmers.
Dr. P.A. Bala, Principal Scientist from the Division of Animal Science, opened the session by welcoming participants and encouraging them to engage with the experts throughout the program. Dr. P. Perumal, Senior Scientist, provided an in-depth explanation of the controlled breeding programme and artificial insemination, highlighting their potential to revolutionize goat husbandry practices.
Dr. Bala further elaborated on effective strategies for goat rearing using locally available feed ingredients, emphasizing sustainable practices. He also discussed feeding techniques like flushing and challenge feeding that can improve the health and productivity of goats.
The event included a hands-on demonstration, where farmers were taught how to assess the body condition of goats and recognise signs of heat.
The session concluded with plans to organize a more comprehensive and detailed training program on similar topics in the future. The event was supervised by Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram.
