The ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) Regional Station in Minicoy celebrated World Tuna Day 2025 by organizing a Fishermen–Scientist Interaction Meet focused on sustainable tuna fisheries and climate-resilient practices.

The event brought together 15 participants, including fishermen and community leaders from seven villages across Minicoy, aiming to strengthen community-based fisheries management and enhance the welfare of the island’s tribal communities.

Dr. Gladston Y. and Dr. Ajina S.M. led discussions on the impact of climate change on tuna resources, policy-level challenges, and the importance of participatory co-management models. Technical sessions were made accessible through real-time translation into the local Mahl language by Mr. Shareefuddeen Hassan and Mr. Arif M.I., ensuring effective community engagement.

Fishermen and moopans (traditional village heads) actively contributed to the dialogue, sharing field experiences that could shape future research and policy directions. The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-CIARI, and reflected the institute’s commitment to sustainable fisheries, environmental stewardship, and inclusive development in India’s island territories.
