In a significant push toward sustainable fisheries management, the Regional Station of ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) in Minicoy conducted a sensitization programme aimed at enhancing sustainability in masmin production and promoting byproduct utilization. The initiative, held on May 1, was funded under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) and drew participation from 131 members of the local masmin production community, including 120 women and 11 men.

The programme brought together fishermen, village moopans, and community representatives from ten villages—Funhilol, Aoumagu, Boduathiri, Bada, New Boduathiri, Sedivalu, Aloodi, Kudehi, Fallessery, and Kendiparty. The focus was on building awareness about sustainable processing practices and the economic potential of converting waste into valuable byproducts.

Dr. Gladston Y. and Ms. Ajina S.M., scientists at the Minicoy Regional Station, led the session along with technical staff Mr. Shareefuddeen Hassan and Mr. Arif M.I. The interactive programme emphasised quality improvement in masmin production, sustainable harvesting techniques, and byproduct management, all communicated in the local language to ensure accessibility and engagement.

Participants shared insights into traditional practices and existing challenges, while the facilitators introduced innovative “waste-to-wealth” strategies aimed at boosting the livelihood of tribal communities involved in the island’s thriving dried fish industry.

The event highlighted ICAR-CIARI’s commitment to sustainable development in the Lakshadweep Islands, guided by the institute’s Director, Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar.
