ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) has been granted a patent for its invention titled “Fly Repellent Composition and Method of Preparation Thereof” on 12th September 2025. The breakthrough offers a safer and more effective way to combat fly-related problems impacting both human and animal health.

Flies are known carriers of several diseases and also cause maggot wounds (myiasis) in livestock, posing serious health and economic challenges. Traditionally, chemical and biological methods have been used for fly control. However, the newly patented formulation from CIARI combines chemical compounds with indigenous, eco-friendly components, offering a ready-to-use spray solution.

According to CIARI, the product is a blend of three chemical compounds, a non-toxic organic polar solvent, and essential oils — all safe for humans, animals, and the environment. Tests have shown the spray effectively repels house flies and flesh flies for up to four hours in open areas like fish markets and animal sheds, and up to 24 hours in enclosed spaces such as sweet shops, bakeries, and homes.

The technology has already been commercialised through a collaboration with island entrepreneur Mr. Sainath Shenoy of Mahalasa Agro Products, South Andaman.

The research team behind the invention includes Dr. Talaviya Harshangkumar, Dr. Arun Kumar De, Dr. D. Bhattacharya, Dr. P. Perumal, Dr. Abhilash, Dr. T. Sujatha, Dr. Jai Sunder, and Dr. E. B. Chakurkar.
