A comprehensive five-day training program focusing on ‘Organic Oyster Mushroom Cultivation Technology’ culminated at the ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Sippighat. The initiative witnessed an active participation of 34 individuals hailing from diverse regions of the Islands. The program aimed to empower Islanders by imparting skills in mushroom cultivation suitable for both urban and peri-urban settings, ultimately fostering self-employment opportunities.

Dr. Nitu Sindhu, a distinguished Women Scientist, took the lead in demonstrating the intricacies of mushroom cultivation during the program. Complementing her efforts, Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Head & Principal Scientist at KVK, elucidated the significance of organic cultivation methodologies. Moreover, Dr. Ramakrishna delved into the nuances of developing effective marketing channels within the Islands.

Mr. Tanmai Paul, the Farm Manager at KVK, provided practical insights into managing spent mushroom substrate, shedding light on additional income-generating avenues. The participants were also treated to a firsthand demonstration of a model unit at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. This demonstration proved instrumental in illustrating the unit’s pivotal role within the integrated farming system and its potential contribution to agro-tourism.

The valedictory session of the training program saw Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, Director of ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) in Port Blair, gracing the event. Dr. Chakurkar emphasised the dual importance of the nutritional value inherent in mushroom cultivation and its promising economic returns. Encouraging active adoption of this technology, he urged the participants to leverage their newfound knowledge for entrepreneurial development within the region.

The successful completion of the training program signifies a step forward in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and fostering economic independence among the Islanders through innovative farming techniques.
