The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), South Andaman, under the administrative control of CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram, organized a two-day training program on the Promotion of Cultivation of Spices at Rabindra Nagar, Hut Bay, from February 6 to 7.
Ms. Sangeetha Vishwas, Pradhan of Rabindra Nagar, Hut Bay, graced the event as the chief guest and encouraged farmers to integrate spice cultivation into their existing agricultural practices. She emphasized the potential benefits of inter-cropping spices to enhance productivity and income.
The training was led by Ms. Sushma, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture), who delivered a lecture on the significance of spice cultivation in the unique agro-climatic conditions of the islands. Mr. Mohit, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection), provided insights into integrated pest and disease management for coconut, arecanut, and vegetables.
Participants also witnessed a hands-on demonstration of the single-node cutting method for multiplying black pepper plants. Additionally, farmers were trained in the proper techniques for harvesting cinnamon.
A total of 13 farmers, including six male farmers and seven farm women, actively participated in the training. The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. E. B. Chkaurkar, Director of ICAR-CIARI.
Such training initiatives play a crucial role in equipping local farmers with scientific knowledge and practical skills to boost spice production in the region.
