PS Chatham has registered a case of cyber fraud after a young resident of Anarkali, Delanipur, was cheated of ₹1 lakh by a fraudster who impersonated her boss through email and WhatsApp.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged at Chatham Police Station, the incident occurred on June 27, 2025. The victim received an email on her official work account from an account that displayed the name of her boss. Believing it to be authentic, she shared her WhatsApp number when asked.

Later the same day, she received WhatsApp messages from a foreign number, again posing as her superior. The fraudster claimed that gifts were being arranged for employees and directed her to purchase 10 App Store Codes from Amazon worth ₹10,000 each. Trusting the request, the victim used two credit cards belonging to her father to buy the codes, which she then shared with the impersonator.

A total of ₹1,00,000 was spent across ten separate transactions, all carried out on the same day. The codes, listed in the FIR, were successfully generated and sent via WhatsApp to the fraudster.

The deception came to light when the fraudster demanded additional codes. On closer inspection, the victim noticed that the original email had not been sent from her boss’s official ID but from a different Gmail account. Realizing she had been duped, she immediately lodged a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal before approaching the local police.

Based on her complaint, a case has been registered under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
