With the advent of New Year’s Eve, concerns loom over potential road safety hazards in the Port Blair vicinity. A recent appeal to the Hon’ble Lt Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, voiced by Mr. Angshuman Roy, State Youth President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti, highlighted pressing issues regarding traffic management and safety during the festive celebrations.

Expressing apprehension over the unrestricted availability of liquor at numerous hotels and resorts, Roy emphasized the risk of irresponsible driving behaviours among the younger generation, particularly regarding late-night stunt performances in areas like Marina Park and the National Highway. Underlining the paramount importance of women’s safety and the sanctity of family-oriented celebrations, the plea stressed the need for proactive measures.

The appeal specifically requested an augmented police presence equipped with breath analysers at key locations such as Delanipur Junction, Light House Junction, Aboo Paan Shop (School Line), Prothrapur Junction, Dollygunj Junction, DBRAIT Gate, Loknath Temple to SBI (Dollygunj), Haddo, Flag Point, Dairy Farm Junction, Bhathu Basti, JNRM on the way to Corbyn’s Beach, and Wandoor.

“Checking every vehicle, both two and four-wheelers, starting from 2200 hrs onward, is strongly urged,” Roy emphasized, emphasising the potential liability of the traffic police in the event of any major accidents attributable to reckless driving or intoxication.

The primary objective behind this appeal is to ensure a safer and more organised New Year’s celebration within Port Blair.

The letter has been copied to several key authorities, including the Chief Secretary of the A & N Administration, the Director-General of Police, A & N Police, and the Deputy Commissioner (SA) for their attention and necessary action.

As the countdown to New Year’s Eve begins, the call for heightened vigilance and stringent measures resonates throughout Port Blair, aiming to create a secure and enjoyable atmosphere for all residents and visitors.
