ICICI Bank has filed an FIR at Mayabunder Police Station following an attempt by an unidentified individual to tamper with the bank’s ATM located in Lucknow, Mayabunder. According to the complaint, the suspect reportedly tampered with the ATM to prevent cash from coming out, mislead customers into believing the ATM was malfunctioning, and subsequently steal the dispensed cash.

The issue surfaced when multiple customers reported a cash dispenser error. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, ICICI Bank officials observed a person allegedly tampering with the ATM. The complaint indicates that the individual deliberately tampered with the ATM to block cash from coming out of the cash dispenser, making it appear that the machine was malfunctioning. The bank alleged that the individual also tried stealing money from the ATM.

ICICI Bank’s branch manager submitted the complaint, seeking legal action against the unidentified individual. The FIR has been registered under Sections 305 and 62 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

The bank has assured its full cooperation with the authorities and is prepared to assist in the investigation as required.

As of now, no information has been released regarding any arrests related to this incident.

Such ATM tampering typically involves the use of small foreign objects or adhesives inserted into the cash dispenser slot, blocking the release of cash. The suspect usually waits nearby until a customer leaves, assuming the machine is broken, and then removes the obstruction to collect the withheld cash. This method allows the thief to steal money without immediate suspicion from customers or security personnel. However, what exactly transpired in the Mayabunder incident remains unclear, as there are several ways criminals attempt to steal money by blocking the ATM cash slot, each employing slightly different techniques to intercept cash.
