International Child Rights Day Celebrated with Enthusiasm in South Andaman

The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) under the District Administration, South Andaman, in collaboration with PANKH NGO, celebrated International Child Rights Day on Thursday at the auditorium of Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, Sri Vijaya Puram. Students from five schools across the district participated in the event, highlighting the need for awareness and advocacy on child rights and responsibilities.

Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman), Mr. Arjun Sharma, IAS, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The Chairperson and Members of the Child Welfare Committee were also present, adding significance to the celebration.

The programme began with the lighting of the traditional lamp, followed by a welcome address by the District Child Protection Officer, South Andaman. A video presentation featuring students who participated in debate competitions earlier this year was screened, setting an inspiring tone.

Master Shaurya Lall, a student of Govt. Model Senior Secondary School, delivered an impactful speech on child rights, duties and social responsibility, receiving appreciation from the audience.

The chief guest presented certificates to students who actively participated in debates organised by DCPU in October 2025. In his address, Mr. Sharma congratulated children on the occasion and lauded the immense potential and talent of the youth in the islands. He urged that their creativity must be encouraged through constructive and positive platforms. Expressing concern over the rising threat of drug exposure among children, he advised them to remain vigilant and stay away from harmful influences.

Earlier this month, DCPU conducted debates in five schools on themes including Digital Awareness, Personal Safety and the Role of Children in Society. The sessions were led by experts from DCPU, the Police Department, Swami Suddhananda Saraswati and members of PANKH NGO.

In the inter-school performances, Govt. Senior Secondary School, Mohanpura emerged as the winner, while Govt. Model Senior Secondary School and Govt. Boys Senior Secondary School secured the second and third positions respectively, reflecting the enthusiasm and awareness among the participants. (Story Based on PR)
