INTUC Federation Holds Workers’ Meeting in Gandhi Bhavan to Revive Trade Union Legacy

In a bid to revive the trade union movement and strengthen worker representation in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Federation organized a workers’ meeting at Gandhi Bhawan. The event was led by senior INTUC leaders including Mr. TSG Bhasker, National Vice-President; Mr. K.P. Usman, State President; and Mr. Anand Rao, State Vice-President of the Federation.

The meeting aimed to reinforce the presence of trade unions across various government departments in the Islands and re-establish INTUC’s historical role as a champion of workers’ rights and welfare.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. TSG Bhasker and Mr. K.P. Usman underscored INTUC’s enduring contribution to the labour movement in India and called for greater unity and activism among workers in the Islands. They emphasized the need to safeguard workers’ rights in the face of evolving labour dynamics.

Key figures who also spoke at the event included Mr. Mohd Rafique, Working President of the INTUC Federation; Mr. Mohd Zubair, President of the City Congress Committee; Ms. M. Bindu, Vice-President of the INTUC Federation; and Mr. Ibrahim Kolakkatil (Baba), President of the DSS Dockyard Employees Union.

The meeting witnessed enthusiastic participation from workers representing a range of departments including the Chatham Saw Mill, DSS Afloat Section, DSS Dockyard Section, Agriculture Department, and the Mini Zoo, among others. Participants expressed solidarity with INTUC’s mission and voiced support for its efforts to reinvigorate the workers’ movement in the Islands.
