The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Branch), organized a vibrant May Day procession to commemorate International Labour Day and honour the contributions of workers across the islands.
The procession began at 2:30 PM from Gandhi Bhawan, the Congress Office in Sri Vijaya Puram, and was led by Mr. Rangalal Halder, President of the Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC), and Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President of INTUC A&N Islands. The march passed through prominent city landmarks including the Gandhi Statue, Clock Tower, Gymkhana Ground junction, and Bengali Club, before returning to its starting point at Gandhi Bhawan.
A total of 29 trade unions affiliated with INTUC participated in the event, alongside leaders and members of the Congress party and elected representatives, demonstrating widespread solidarity among the working class.
At the culmination of the procession, a public meeting was held where Mr. Rangalal Halder, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, Mr. K.P. Aboobacker (General Secretary, INTUC), and Miss. Mariam Bibi (Zilla Parishad Member) addressed the gathering. The speakers highlighted the historical significance of International Labour Day and reiterated their commitment to workers’ rights.
They also brought attention to pressing issues affecting workers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which, they said, have already been raised with the A&N Administration and the Government of India for redressal.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma urged the working community to remain united in their struggle for justice, welfare, and improved working conditions. He thanked the participants for their enthusiastic involvement, calling the event a resounding success.
