IRCA and Social Welfare Directorate Lead Observance of Anti-Drug Day in South Andaman

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed with a solemn and impactful programme at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Auditorium, Sri Vijaya Puram, on June 26. The event was jointly organized by the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA) and the Directorate of Social Welfare, A&N Administration.

The programme was graced by Mr. L. Kumar, IAS, Secretary (Social Welfare), and Mr. Arjun Sharma, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, along with officials from the Health Department, Police, Municipal Council, Rural Development, Child Care Institutions, and representatives of NGOs including Pankh and Human Touch. Students from ITI, ANM Training School, and DPMI also actively participated.

The event commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp, symbolizing the commitment to a drug-free society. A powerful Nukkad Natak (street play) presented by the Swachhata Awareness Team of the Municipal Council set the tone for the programme, drawing attention to the dangers of substance abuse.

A Medical Officer from IRCA conducted a briefing session and administered a pledge, reinforcing collective resolve to combat drug abuse.

Speakers highlighted key initiatives under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), the critical role of IRCA in rehabilitation, and the importance of sustained awareness campaigns. The Nodal Officer (Prohibition) shared insights into a month-long series of awareness activities carried out in coordination with various departments and NGO partners.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 500 attendees and concluded with a prize distribution ceremony followed by the National Anthem.
