In a major step towards modernising animal husbandry practices in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services has deputed a group of 25 progressive farmers for an exposure visit and training programme on piggery management and marketing.
The training is being conducted at the ICAR – National Research Centre on Pig (ICAR-NRC on Pig), Rani, Guwahati, Assam, from June 3 to June 5, 2025.
Prior to their departure, the group interacted with the Secretary (AH&VS), who encouraged the farmers to make full use of the opportunity, explore new technologies, and adopt innovative marketing approaches that could help scale up pig farming into a viable industry in the Islands. The Secretary also wished the participants a productive learning experience and a safe return.
The selected group represents a wide cross-section of pig-rearing communities from across the archipelago, including:
– Middle Andaman: 1 farmer from Rangat and 8 from Billiground
– North Andaman: 5 farmers from Diglipur
- South Andaman: 1 from Rangachang, 2 from Chouldhari, 1 from Wimberlygunj, and 2 from Swaraj Dweep
- Nicobar District: 3 from Pulopanja and 2 from Makachua
Pig farming remains a vital source of livelihood for many in the Islands. The specialized training is aimed at equipping farmers with updated knowledge in breeding, health management, and modern marketing strategies. Officials hope the exposure to scientific methods will not only boost productivity and income but also contribute to the broader goal of sustainable rural economic development in the region.
