A Jan Sunwai (public hearing) was organised at the Kalighat Panchayat Hall on Saturday under the chairmanship of Ms. Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, Superintendent of Police (District), North & Middle Andaman. She was accompanied by Mr. Ankesh Yadav, DANIPS, SDPO Diglipur, and SI S.N. Halder, SHO, PS Kalighat.

The interactive programme drew participation from more than 80 people, including Pradhans, Zilla Parishad members, PRI representatives, and local residents. Participants voiced concerns over issues such as the illegal sale of liquor, traffic and parking problems, the need for police deployment at key locations, and the growing challenge of drug abuse.

Responding to the grievances, SP (D) N&MA assured that the police department would take appropriate measures to address them. She stressed that effective policing requires active community cooperation and collective responsibility for maintaining peace and order.

An awareness session was also held, highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse and the importance of road safety and traffic discipline. The session sought to sensitise the community and encourage responsible civic behaviour.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Sugathan urged the public to share credible information on drug abuse, criminal activities, or any unlawful practices with the police. She assured that the identity of informers would be kept confidential and that suitable rewards would be given for valuable inputs.

Residents have been requested to report crimes or suspicious activities to their nearest police station or through helpline numbers 100, 112, and 03192-273344.
