A teacher of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Car Nicobar, lost her life on Holi on Tuesday after being swept away by waves at a beach near the JNV campus at Arong village.
The deceased has been identified as Ms. Renuka, who was serving as a teacher at JNV Car Nicobar.
According to sources, five teachers along with the son of the school principal had gone to the beach during the morning hours. While they were at the shore, three of them were suddenly swept away by strong waves.
Local residents present nearby managed to rescue two of the individuals. However, Ms. Renuka was carried further into the sea by powerful waves and water currents.
She was later extracted from the area by an Indian Air Force helicopter and airlifted to the Air Force Station at Car Nicobar. She was subsequently taken to BJR Hospital in the headquarters area, where doctors declared her brought dead on arrival.
Sources said Ms. Renuka did not have any immediate family members in Car Nicobar, and her family is reportedly based in Sri Vijaya Puram.
It is learnt that the group had not entered the sea for swimming, though it remains unclear how the waves swept them away.
